DJI's latest drone, the Mini SE, is the company's smallest, lightest and cheapest drone yet, aiming to offer an affordable entry into the world of aerial photography. Along with 2.7K-resolution video capture and 12-megapixel stills, the 249-gram drone offers 30 minutes of flight time.

That's not bad for a drone with a price tag of only $300, particularly when you consider the physically identical Mini 2 comes in at $450. The Mini SE is on sale now in the US, with no plans yet for a wider launch into the UK. The drone is listed for sale in Australia, although it's not yet available to buy through DJI's store or its official Amazon page. For reference though, that $300 price tag converts to roughly £220 or AU$420. 

The Mini SE shares the same body as the Mini 2, with a folding design that packs up small enough to fit into a jacket pocket. The weight gets it in just under the wire in the US for avoiding the need to register with the FAA. I found the Mini 2's size and weight to be great for chucking in a bag and heading out on hikes where I don't necessarily know if I want aerial shots, but I want to be able to get them if creativity strikes. 

Some compromises have been made to the key specs in order to get that price down, though. The maximum video resolution is 2.7k rather than 4K, the maximum speed is slightly slower (13 metres per second, rather than 16) and it lacks advanced photography features such as raw image shooting and auto exposure bracketing. The Mini SE does, however, pack intelligent flight modes that I've found to be a great way of getting good-looking footage with little experience.

There's no question it's a drone aimed squarely at either beginners or casual hobbyists who just want some nice aerial footage on their travels, rather than people who want to spend longer crafting beautifully cinematic footage for their Instagram Reels or whatever. 

The Mini SE comes in at a great starting price, but the Mini 2 -- with its better cameras -- is $150 more. The missing link here is the possibility of a DJI Mini SE Fly More Combo. That's when DJI bundles in some key accessories, like extra batteries and rotors. The Mini 2 Fly More Combo costs $600 total -- an extra $150 over the $450 price for the standalone DJI Mini 2. Amazon Australia has a listing for a Mini SE Combo, but there's currently no pricing available. Ideally, that's a real thing, and something that will reach other markets as we get closer to the holidays.

My advice in the meantime:

• The DJI Mini 2 is the best starter drone if you want 4K image quality. Get the Fly More Combo if you want to hot swap batteries for longer flight sessions. Read our DJI Mini 2 hands-on.
• The DJI Mini SE is an interesting option if you're on a budget and don't care about 4K video, but I'd wait a few more weeks to see if that Fly More Combo hits in the US. If it's priced between $400 and $450, that would be a compelling all-in-one option for beginners.
• Anyone who currently owns a first-gen DJI Mavic Mini won't find much value in an upgrade to the Mini SE. If that's you, look at the Mini 2 or consider graduating to a DJI Air 2S.

The iPhone 14 Pro Max may have a higher resolution camera, a new processor from Apple and a supersized 6.7-inch screen like the current iPhone 13 Pro Max. Those updates would certainly be appreciated, but they're also fairly routine for an annual iPhone upgrade. Apple might need more to make its premium iPhone stand out in 2022. 

That's because the iPhone 14 Pro Max won't be the only gigantic iPhone in Apple's lineup anymore, if the latest rumors are to be believed. Apple is expected to release a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max as well this year, meaning those who love large screens won't have to splurge on the Pro Max just to get a bigger display. Analysts have also speculated that Apple could increase the prices of the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max compared to last year, potentially making the Pro Max an even tougher sell.  

Aside from the difference in screen size, there's typically little that separates Apple's "Pro" iPhones from its "Pro Max" devices. I'm hoping that changes with the Phone 14 Pro Max, which we're expecting to learn about during Apple's upcoming Sept. 7 event. With inflation putting a dent in smartphone shipments, companies like Apple may have to work harder to convince consumers to spend more on high-end devices. 

iPhone 14 Pro Max: What to expect

If Apple does release an iPhone 14 Pro Max in September, it's likely to be a sequel to Apple's current iPhone 13 Pro Max. As such, it will probably have a 6.7-inch screen and a triple-lens camera that includes wide, ultrawide and telephoto lenses. In an effort to further distinguish its Pro iPhones from its standard iPhones, Apple will reportedly give the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max an upgraded 48-megapixel camera sensor, a faster A16 Bionic chip and a redesigned camera module on the front that removes the notch. 

These features are said to be exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, meaning they won't appear on the standard iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max. That's all according to reports from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman and TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, both of which have strong track records when it comes to reporting on unreleased Apple products.

Provided Apple maintains its current pricing structure, the iPhone 14 Pro Max will likely start at $1,100 for the 128GB model. The iPhone 14 Pro will likely begin at $1,000.

Why the iPhone 14 Pro Max needs to stand out

If the reports turn out to be true, the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max could include one of the biggest camera improvements we've seen on the iPhone in years. That alone could make them appealing to those in the market for a new device. 

The problem, however, is that the iPhone 14 Pro Max could end up getting lost in the shuffle. Shoppers who just care about having the best camera could get by with the cheaper iPhone 14 Pro, while those who primarily want a large screen may opt for the rumored iPhone 14 Max. Both devices will likely be cheaper than the iPhone 14 Pro Max. 

The launch would also come at a time when people are seemingly spending less on mobile devices and being more careful about their purchases. Smartphone shipments are expected to decline by 3.5% in 2022, according to estimates from the International Data Corporation published in June. The NPD Group reported in May that more than eight in 10 consumers are planning to reassess their product spending in the next three to six months. A recent NPD survey also indicated consumers plan to seek less-expensive items, look for promotions and cut back on overall purchases in the next few months. 

These factors could make it more difficult to convince consumers to spend more than $1,000 on a new phone, especially when they may be able to get some of the same benefits (a larger screen or a triple-lens camera) on cheaper models. With the iPhone 14 Pro Max, Apple would likely be counting on the fact that consumers are willing to pay a premium to get both a larger screen and a better camera.

How Apple could make the iPhone 14 Pro Max feel special

There are a few things Apple could do to make the iPhone 14 Pro Max stand out alongside the regular iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Max. As I've written in the past, I'd love to see Apple implement iPad-like software features that make better use of the Pro Max's giant screen. For example, it could add a multitasking mode that makes it easier to view more than one app simultaneously. I'd also like to see an always-on display option, similar to the one available on newer Apple Watch models and many competing Android phones. 

Samsung has done a better job of distinguishing its premium Galaxy S22 Ultra from the regular Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus. Even though the $1,200 Galaxy S22 Ultra is likely too expensive for most people, it offers distinct features you can't get on Samsung's less-expensive models. The Ultra has a built-in stylus for notetaking and drawing, a 6.8-inch screen that's larger than any other phone in Samsung's S22 lineup, a higher resolution 40-megapixel selfie camera and main camera system with two telephoto lenses and a 10-times optical zoom.

None of those characteristics are available on Samsung's other S22 devices, including the $1,000 Galaxy S22 Plus. The iPhone 13 Pro Max, by comparison, has a lot in common with the iPhone 13 Pro, aside from its larger screen and longer battery life. In other words, Apple is relying on the iPhone 13 Pro Max's 6.7-inch screen to distinguish it from the regular Pro. 

But if Apple does release a 6.7-inch version of the standard iPhone, just as reports from Nikkei Asian Review, Bloomberg and Ming-Chi Kuo indicate, the iPhone 14 Pro Max might feel less unique in this year's lineup. The rumored iPhone 14 Max likely won't have the same extras as Apple's Pro iPhones, such as a triple-lens camera and a screen with a higher refresh rate for smoother scrolling. But it might be compelling enough to entice shoppers that simply want a larger screen and don't care as much about having a telephoto lens. 

Regardless, the iPhone 14 Pro Max will be a top seller if its predecessors are any indication. The iPhone 13 Pro Max landed in the top five smartphone models in regions such as the US, UK, France, Germany and China, according to Counterpoint Research. The iPhone 12 Pro Max was also the second best-selling phone globally in 2021, Counterpoint Research also reported. 

Still, until a foldable iPhone comes along, the iPhone Pro Max will be Apple's most expensive and most premium iPhone. That also means it should be the best showcase of Apple's technology, which is why I'd like to see more exclusive features that you can't get elsewhere.

While Amazon, Google and others explore how to use drones to deliver merchandise to customers, drug smugglers in Mexico are turning to the remote-controlled aircraft to deliver packages of a different kind.

A drone carrying methamphetamines crashed into a parking lot at a shopping center in Tijuana on Tuesday. According to the Associated Press, the Tijuana Police Department announced on Wednesday that the drone crashed near the San Ysidro border crossing. The police told U-T San Diego that the drone likely was being used to ferry drugs between neighborhoods and not across the heavily guarded US-Mexico border where the drone had better chances of being spotted.

Six packets of meth, weighing about 6.6 pounds, were taped to the underside of a six-propeller drone, the AP reports. Authorities are investigating who was flying the drone and where the flight originated. Police believe the drone is a DJI Spread Wings S900, which can fly autonomously. That could make it more challenging to track down the responsible party.

This isn't the first time Tijuana police have seen drones used to transport drugs. Drone smuggling is just the latest way drug runners are trying to traffic their product within and outside of Mexico. Previous smuggling efforts made use of catapults, extensive tunnels and -- I kid you not -- a pneumatic pot cannon that attempted to transport drugs across the US-Mexico border.

So, while you may think drones are a fun, albeit expensive way to capture the perfect selfie, realize that in the wrong hands, drones also have a bit of a dark side.

Netflix's trilogy of Kanye West documentary films, Jeen-yuhs -- a series that intimately recorded West over two decades and was bought by Netflix for a reported $30 million -- will be released on Netflix over three weeks starting Feb. 16. But fans who want to watch it even earlier have two different opportunities, if they know when and where to find it. 

Netflix has experimented with various release tempos for different film projects over the years. Its teen-horror trilogy Fear Street, for example, also landed on Netflix weekly over three weeks last summer. While Netflix has never relied on box office success as a meaningful part of its business, its decisions to release some films first in theaters and, especially, to drop installments weekly are two of its gambits that may extend the hype cycle for its movies. 

The first chance to watch Jeen-yuhs is as part of the Sundance Film Festival, with a Tuesday screening that is the second of only two planned streams. 

The fest still has $20 tickets available; to snag one, set up a Sundance Film Festival account and then click the button Select a Screening underneath the Single Day Ticket tile on the fest's ticketing page. Look for the "Select Film" button next to Jeen-yuhs in the Jan. 25 section. You'll have until 8 a.m. PT on Wednesday to start watching the doc. The second opportunity to watch Jeen-yuhs early will be in actual theaters on Feb. 10, when the first film will screen in cinemas across the US for one day only. 

Then Netflix will release the first film in the series globally for all subscribers to stream on Feb. 16, following up by dropping the subsequent two films weekly. That means the third installment will be available on Feb. 23 and the final one, March 2. 

Netflix describes Jeen-yuhs as an "intimate and revealing portrait" filmed over two decades, tracing West's formative days in Chicago to "his life today as a global brand and artist" with never-before-seen footage. Created by filmmakers Clarence "Coodie" Simmons and Chike Ozah, known as Coodie and Chike, the duo are recurrent collaborators with West. They co-directed his 2003 Through the Wire video as well as one of the three videos made for his 2004 hit Jesus Walks.

Netflix plans to expand the catalog of mobile games it launched in November, but few Netflix subscribers are reportedly playing along. 

Netflix has more than 20 mobile games for iOS and Android users and plans to up its offering to 50 games by the end of the year, according to a CNBC. So far, less than 1% of Netflix's 221 million subscribers are reportedly playing those games on the streaming service on a daily basis. Netflix games have been downloaded 23.3 million times and average 1.7 million players each day, reported CNBC, citing data from app analytics company Apptopia. 

For comparison, popular mobile games such as Subway Surfers, Roblox and Among Us each have over 100 million downloads, according to Apptopia. 

Netflix's catalog currently features games such as Stranger Things: 1984, 12 Minutes, and spins on classic mobile games like Shooting Hoops, Bowling Ballers and Card Blast. Netflix is reportedly adding games across genres and shows, including Queen's Gambit Chess.

Netflix didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. Last year, Chief Operating Officer Greg Peter said Netflix plans to experiment with games and try a bunch of things, but he added that the long-term prize would be the ability to create "properties that are connected to the universes, the characters, the stories that we're building."

Netflix is full steam ahead on methods to generate new income and keep people's attention. In its last quarter, Netflix lost almost 1 million subscribers from April through June.

Espresso is a tough drink to make. Brewing the stuff requires lots of steam pressure to push hot water through finely ground beans, and it all needs to happen fast, in about 30 seconds. That's something only elite espresso machines can successfully tackle. The problem is, quality espresso brewers can easily set you back multiple hundreds of dollars.

However, there are ways to mimic some of the delicious qualities of espresso without a fancy espresso machine. In this guide I'll lay out two of these far less expensive methods. While not as good as the genuine thing, the coffee you'll be able to make will be strong, rich, and super concentrated. Sometimes, that's all you need to start your morning. 

Option 1: Moka Pot

Invented by Italian engineer Alfonso Bialetti in 1933, the Moka Pot is a classic that remains popular today. The aluminium brewer sports a distinctive art deco design, and it doesn't even need electricity. Just heat it up on your kitchen stove to operate it. 

Start by unscrewing the brewer base from the pitcher. Fill the base with water to the fill line (just below the release valve). In my case I used 5.4 ounces of water (153.1 grams). Next add grounds to the filter funnel. Your grounds should be slightly finer than what you'd use for drip coffee -- a good coffee grinder can help with that. 

Once it's full, scrape away any excess grounds and put the funnel into the base. With that done, the amount of grounds in my brewer came to 0.42 ounces (12 grams). Next, screw the base back onto the main brewer body. Now place the Moka Pot onto one of your stove's burners. Pro tip: Try to set the brewer down a little off-center -- this way the handle won't get too hot to, well, handle.

Turn the burner on to medium heat and leave the brewer's lid open. After 5 to 7 minutes liquid coffee should start to flow up from the bottom of the brewer through the valve in its top section. Once the flow stops, or begins to sputter, turn the burner off. 

Since the Moka Pot is constructed from aluminum, its body can get hot. Take care not to touch any metal parts or you'll get burned. Immediately take the brewer to the sink and run cold water over its base. 

Once the base has cooled, pour coffee into your favorite cup. The coffee I made in the Moka Pot was strong and, while not true espresso, it was deep, dark and rich. A quick refractometer reading confirmed this: I recorded a high TDS (total dissolved solids) percentage of 2.5. That's slightly above the ideal range of 1.9 to 2.3%, but not outrageously so. This joe packed a big flavor punch and wasn't bitter at all. 

Option 2: Aeropress

Another popular way to create really strong coffee is to use the Aeropress. This inexpensive gadget was dreamed up by the man, Alan Adler, who also brought us the aerobie frisbee-style flying disk. The Aeropress made its debut in 2005, and essentially is a cross between a French press and an upside down Moka Pot.

Start by adding a paper filter to the Aeropress' filter cap. Next twist the cap onto the brewer's brewing chamber. Add one scoop of ground coffee (coarseness suitable for drip) to the brewing chamber. In my case that came to 0.35 ounces (10 grams). Give the chamber a shake to even out the grounds inside.

Now place the chamber on top of a sturdy coffee mug. Next, add hot water to the chamber up to the "1" symbol on its inner wall. Aeropress recommends water at specifically 175 degrees Fahrenheit (79.4 Celsius), though a minute or so off the boil works, too. The amount of water I used weighed in at 4.25 ounces (120.5 grams).

Stir the grounds for about 10 seconds. Insert the Aeropress plunger into the top of the chamber. Carefully press the plunger down until it reaches the grounds and filter. You should hear a little hiss once that happens. Now your coffee is ready.

The liquid brew I made in the Aeropress was strong, too. It wasn't technically espresso, more like a robust French press. That said, it was certainly stiff enough to hit my taste buds with plenty of deep coffee flavor. It wasn't bitter and lacked grit of any kind.

I measured the TDS concentration to be 1.5%. That translates to an extraction percentage of 16. It's also a little under the recommended 19 to 23%. Still, this coffee wasn't bitter and was quite smooth, and I'm sure with a little tinkering I can create an even more powerful, balanced cup. With the right gear, there's no reason you can't as well.

Netflix laid off workers at its Tudum fan website Thursday, a culling that comes less than five months after the streaming service launched the site and a week after Netflix reported its first subscriber loss in a decade. The drop in viewers has buffeted Hollywood's confidence in streaming as the engine for future growth, casting new scrutiny on Netflix for any signs of weakness.

Netflix declined to comment on the scale of the layoffs. "Fan website Tudum is an important priority for the company," it said in a statement.

Five workers, whose Twitter handles match the names of authors on Tudum's site, tweeted about losing their jobs Thursday, among posts by other laid-off writers and editors that CNET couldn't independently confirm. The cuts appear to be minor compared with the size of Netflix's entire workforce and limited to the Tudum operation. Overall, Netflix had 11,300 employees at the end of last year. 

Netflix launched Tudum in December as "the official companion site" to its streaming service. Stylized as a resource for news about Netflix shows and movies and fan-focused articles diving deeper into Netflix programming, it was unveiled by Netflix's former marketing chief Bozoma Saint John, who left the company in March. 

Up until last week, Netflix's years of unflagging growth pushed nearly all of Hollywood's major media companies to pour billions of dollars into their own streaming operations. These so-called streaming wars brought about a wave of new services, including Apple TV Plus, Disney Plus, HBO Max, Peacock and Paramount Plus, among others. The hard pivot to streaming has profound implications for the future of Hollywood, but for people like you, it complicates how many services they must use -- and pay for -- to watch your favorite shows and movies online. 

Netflix said last week that its subscriber ranks shrank by 200,000 accounts in the first three months of this year. It was the company's first overall decline in membership in 10 years -- stretching back to the age when DVDs-by-mail were still a meaningful part of Netflix's business. While the decline was mostly because Netflix lost 700,000 subscribers as it pulled out of Russia following the invasion of Ukraine, Netflix warned that it expects to lose 2 million more by the end of June. 

It's a classic dilemma: We need a certain amount of exercise each week, but most of us have trouble motivating ourselves to actually do it. Only 23% of US adults meet all of the guidelines for weekly exercise, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, even though studies have found that people do understand the health benefits of working out. 

So what gives? There are a lot of reasons that people don't exercise more. You may be short on time or energy, or you may not have the equipment that you feel like you need.

But while you might imagine sneakers, sports bras and weight benches when you think of "exercise," you don't have to hit the gym to meet the CDC's guidelines for physical activity. In fact, the CDC's 2018 National Health Statistics report, which contains that 23% statistic, doesn't mention the word "exercise" once. Instead, it's all about physical activity and movement -- whether for work, play or by doctor's orders.

For most of human history, physical activity was incorporated into people's daily lives in the form of labor and chores. These days, people spend a lot more time sitting still on couches, desk chairs and cars. But our lives still require physical movement each day, and it can be easier to meet your daily exercise quota with activities that you need to do anyway (like mowing the lawn) than set aside extra time to do a dedicated workout. 

Rethinking your idea of exercise might inspire you to get even more active – and you're not necessarily missing out if you skip the gym in favor of sweeping. Here's what to know.

Short answer: Yes. "Your body can't tell the difference between bending over to pull out a weed and bending down to pick up a kettlebell," explains Robert S. Herbst, a personal trainer and world champion powerlifter.

Experts divide exercise into two categories: formal exercise and informal exercise. According to Mike Murphy, owner and head physiotherapist of Ireland's RAPID clinic, most people don't see informal exercise as, well, actual exercise. "This may be because informal exercise is difficult to quantify -- one hour walking seems easier to quantify than cleaning the house. But the reality is that many everyday tasks use up far more energy than light exercise," Murphy said.

"Everyday walking up and down stairs, to the shops, carrying things, hanging clothes out to dry, etc. -- all of these activities build up and over weeks and months these can significantly influence our energy balance (contributing significantly to weight gain or weight loss)," he continued.

In fact, even some formal workouts intentionally mimic the "primal movement patterns that represent our daily movement patterns for life," such as squatting, pushing, pulling and twisting, as Brian Nunez, Nike master trainer and performance coach, put it. These programs are known as "functional training." Meanwhile, a workout regimen that involves everyday activities rather than formal exercise is also called NEAT exercise, or non-exercise activity thermogenesis.

So, in short, don't discount all the physical activities that you engage in without intending to exercise. Non-exercise activities are a great way to not only improve your health, but also complete tasks more easily and reduce your risk of injury (no more pulling a muscle carrying the groceries in).

Here are 10 everyday activities that count as exercise, according to experts.

Yard or lawn care

Anyone who's ever mowed the lawn by hand in the height of summer knows that it's a true workout. Nunez explains: "Aside from the low impact and cardiovascular benefits, mowing the lawn requires a lot of functional movement primal patterns in the process of set up, mowing the lawn and clean up."

Other types of yard work that are a great workout include gardening, weeding, shoveling snow or leaves and much more.

Running errands

Who says your hour-long daily walk can't be through the aisles of Target? Seriously, though, errands often involve plenty of walking, carrying, lifting and other movements.

Cleaning the house

Cleaning the house can involve a wide range of physical movements -- going up and down stairs, carrying things from room to room, pushing and pulling the mop or broom and more. 

Walking the dog

Need we say more? You may be more occupied with getting your pup exercise during their daily walk, but don't forget that you're getting your steps in at that time, too.

Walking, anywhere

You may have heard that sitting for long periods of time is bad for you. But getting up and moving your body every 30 minutes or so is helpful, and walking is great exercise, period -- whether it's to the mailbox, down the hall to wave to your coworker or to grab a snack. 

The 'I'm late' sprint

If you take public transportation regularly, you probably get a ton of light- to moderate-intensity activity throughout your days just by getting to the bus or train. And if you're running late and have to jog a little, that's all the more effort expended.

Playing with kids

Got kids in your life? Getting involved in their play, rather than watching from the nearest couch or bench, will have you out of breath pretty quickly.

Dancing

Maybe you like to go out dancing, or maybe you're more of the "solo dance party in your pajamas" type. Either way, know that dancing can be a full-body workout and great cardio, too.

If you've been thinking about trading in an older Samsung Galaxy S device, now is the time to lock in your price.

According to the trade-in site Nextworth, older Samsung Galaxy smartphones are at their peak. But prices are likely to start dropping in the coming weeks. In this edition of Ask Maggie, I talk to a NextWorth executive who explains why the company increased the value it has been paying consumers who trade in older Galaxy S series devices. I also help another reader figure out the best place for trading in her old devices.

Older Galaxy S smartphones increase in value

I'm considering upgrading to the Samsung Galaxy S5. I've been using a Galaxy S3 for the past couple of years. I've heard that it's a good idea to sell old devices before the new one goes on sale. But I wasn't quite ready to commit to the Galaxy S5. Is it too late to sell my Galaxy S3? Will I still get a good price?

I've got some good news for you. It's not too late to sell your old Galaxy S3 and in fact, you'll probably get top dollar for it if you lock in your price as soon as you can.

Jeff Trachsel, chief marketing officer for Nextworth, said that in the week or so before the launch of the new Samsung S5 , his trade-in Web site actually raised the prices they were paying for older Samsung Galaxy S devices by about 15 percent. He said strong demand for these older models and low inventory of trade-ins on these devices is what has driven the increase in value.

But he warned that the high prices won't last long.

"We're already starting to see demand soften," he said. "And since the release of the Galaxy S5 on April 11, we've seen a big uptick in people coming to the Nextworth site to get quotes on older Galaxy S phones."

What this means for you and the other Galaxy S2, S3, and S4 owners is that you should lock in your quotes as soon as you can before the values start dropping.

So what's going on?

Conventional wisdom suggests that if you're trading in old gadgets it's better to sell sooner rather than later. Just like cars, old gadgets start depreciating almost the moment you take them for a spin around the block. And in general, Trachsel says that still holds true.

"Over time the value of all devices goes down. That is just a function of depreciation," he said. "So holding on to an older device and hoping for an uptick in the price is generally not a good strategy."

He added that what he has seen recently with the older Galaxy S phones is not a common occurrence when it comes to gadget trade-ins.

"I've been at Nextworth for three years," he said. "And I can tell you that it's very rare that prices ever increase."

Indeed, when Nextworth analyzed pricing information over the past couple of years, the company saw some consistent trends. In the four to five months leading up to and following the launch of the Galaxy S3 and the Galaxy S4, prices on the older Galaxy S phones declined about 25 percent to 30 percent.

In general, the decline is steepest when a new generation of device is first announced and right after it goes on sale. The same pattern holds true for the Apple iPhone, which is also released on a yearly basis like the Galaxy S series.

Trachsel said the reason why Nextworth decided to raise the price it pays on Galaxy S trade-ins is because the company was seeing higher demand for these devices. At the same time, the inventory was relatively low. He explained that demand isn't just coming from overseas. There has also been strong demand domestically.

"We couldn't keep them in stock," he said. "I think the lower price point of older Galaxy phones is really attractive. People know the Samsung Galaxy brand, but they may not be able to afford a newer model. So they get an older version, much like we've seen people do with the iPhone."

Indeed, Samsung has built a successful brand in the Galaxy S series. Trachsel said Google Android smartphones from other manufacturers do not have the same resale and trade-in value that Samsung Galaxy products get. Samsung has essentially copied Apple's playbook from the yearly product release cycle to the consistent release and branding across carriers. And it's worked. This strategy coupled with an aggressive and expensive marketing campaign has made the Galaxy brand a household name.

All this awareness is good news for Galaxy users who are looking to resell their older phones.

The Bottom Line:

Nextworth's Trachsel says now is the time to sell your old Galaxy S devices. Prices are likely at their peak, and they'll soon start declining in the coming weeks as the market gets flooded with older devices from people trading them in for the new Galaxy S5. There are also some good promotions out there that sweeten the deal further. For instance, Nextworth is offering an extra 10 percent on top of the trade in value. So my advice to you is that if you really want the Galaxy S5, lock in your price today on your old Galaxy S3.

Trade-in sites vs. retailers?

There are pros and cons to trading a device in online as well as trading it in at a retail store.

Pros of in-store trade-ins

• Convenience: If you're a regular shopper at Target or there's a Best Buy in your neighborhood, simply taking your device into the store is probably the easiest and most convenient way to trade it in.
• Better offer: Retailers tend to offer higher values for some phones, depending on the promotions they're running. For instance, Target is running a promotion right now that guarantees customers get at least $100 on their old devices to put toward the cost of a new Samsung Galaxy S5. The discount coupons must be used the same day to buy the new Galaxy S5, and it can only be used for devices on a two-year contract.

Cons of in-store trade-ins

• Payment comes in store credit: Often the payment method for trade-in programs at retailers is store-credit. This is why retailers are often able to offer higher values for certain devices. And the trade-in value may come with strings attached, such as the Target promotion I just mentioned, which requires you use a coupon from your trade-in to buy a new device with a two-year contract.

Pros of online trade-in sites

• Cold hard cash: Online sites like Gazelle and Nextworth offer customers cash. And as they say, "Cash is king."
• Easy to comparison shop: If you're planning to trade-in your old device online, it's easy to get quotes from multiple Web sites and see which one offers you the best deal. You should always make sure, the trade-in site you're dealing with is reputable. There are lots of sites out there that have gotten poor customers reviews and have been cited by the Better Business Bureau.

Cons of online trade-in sites:

• Bait and switch: Sometimes when device owners send in their devices, the price they were quoted online is not the actual price that they will fetch for their device. Even the most reputable firms reserve the right to alter the price they pay for devices if they appear more damaged than what was reported online as part of the price quote process.
• Can be less convenient: Sending in a device by mail takes a little bit more effort than going to a store and trading it in. You need to contact the company and wait for an envelope or box to arrive that you can use to send your device to the trade-in company. And then you have to wait for them to receive the package and assess the phone. After all that, they will finally cut you a check.
• Lower value: Because online companies offer cash for the device that's traded-in, you may get a lower offer than what's offered in a store. Online trade-in sites don't have the luxury of selling you a another device or some other in-store products. That said, as I mentioned above. You will be getting cash for your old device. And some people may view this as a primary benefit.

The Bottom Line:

At the end of the day, whether you trade-in your old device at a retailer or online depends on the type of consumer you are. If you shop at Target a lot or you're planning to turn around and upgrade to a newer device, an in-store trade-in program may be the way to go. In that instance, store credit is as good as cash. But if you'd rather pocket the cash you earn from the sale of your old devices, then go with an online trade-in site.
